South Western Primorye is a narrow strip (10-60 km) extending along the Russian-Chinese border for 200 km and occupying the area of 740 thousand hectares. In the south, near the DPRK border, it is restricted by the Tumannaya River, and in the north by the Razdolnaya River. In the natural sense it is mainly a low forest territory, and also a narrow strip of coastal flatland from the estuary of the Tumannaya River to the estuary of the Razdolnaya river. Administratively, South Western Primorye includes the entire Khasan District and partially the territories of the following municipal areas: Ussuriski region (western part), Nadezhdinski region (western part), and Oktyabrski region (southern part). South Western Primorye has twenty-four populated localities functioning within 10 rural administrations. South Western Primorye has sixty-one populated localities, six of which are of urban type, all situated in Khasan District. The largest are Slavyanka with 17,4 thousand inhabitants, Zarubino with 4,7 thousand and Kraskino with 4,3 thousand. As of January 1, 2000, the population of South Western Primorye was 53,568,000 inhabitants, 30,000 of who lived in urban settlements. |
